PODCAST 5: Partner Story with Tanya Henderson, MVP
Navigating the Journey from Dynamics GP to Business Central
Insights from an MVP Leader
What if the system you’ve used for 20 years is no longer the one that will take you forward?
That’s the real question many Dynamics GP users are facing today.
And here’s the truth: the move to Business Central is not just a system change. It’s a mindset shift.
Story
In my recent conversation with Tanya, a fellow Microsoft MVP and solution architect, her journey stood out right away.
She didn’t plan this path.
She started in a completely different place—working on a web-based product during a time when her company was struggling. Then one unexpected opportunity changed everything. Someone asked her to help choose an accounting system.
She said yes.
That one decision led her into Dynamics GP. From there, she became deeply skilled—especially in Project Accounting—and built a strong career.
But what really caught my attention was this:
Almost 10 years ago, she saw where things were heading.
When Project Madeira (what we now know as Business Central) was introduced, she made a decision early. She didn’t wait. She didn’t resist.
She started learning.
At first, it wasn’t easy. She was surrounded by NAV experts. She even felt out of place.
But she stayed consistent.
Now? The same people who once questioned her move are asking her for guidance.
And that says a lot.
Lesson
There were a few clear lessons from our conversation.
1. Change is uncomfortable—but worth it
Many GP users hesitate because they are comfortable.
That’s normal.
But as Tanya said, once users spend time in Business Central, they start to see it differently. After a few months, they don’t want to go back.
Not because GP is bad—but because BC opens new possibilities.
2. GP knowledge is not a disadvantage
This was powerful.
There’s a belief that NAV or BC consultants have the advantage.
But Tanya pointed out something important:
GP consultants understand the user.
They speak the language. They know the processes. They know the pain points.
And that matters a lot during transition.
3. You don’t need to get everything perfect on Day 1
One common fear is: “What if we set it up wrong?”
Here’s the reality:
Business Central is flexible.
Dimensions can change. Pages can be personalized. Extensions can be added.
You can evolve your system over time.
That takes pressure off.
4. The learning never stops
Even after years of experience, Tanya still learns something new in sessions.
That’s the mindset.
Not “I already know this.”
But “What else can I learn today?”
With AI, Copilot, Power Platform—everything is moving fast.
The only way to stay relevant is to stay curious.
5. Community makes the journey easier
This was one of my favorite parts.
Tanya talked about having two families—the GP community and the Business Central (NAV) community.
And she’s right.
This space is different.
People help each other. They share knowledge. They answer questions.
You are not doing this alone.
Call to Action
If you’re a GP user thinking about Business Central, here’s my advice:
Start now.
Not when everything is urgent. Not when support ends. Not when you’re forced.
Start learning. Start exploring. Start asking questions.
And most of all—don’t be afraid of what’s next.
